Authentic Connections

This presentation will introduce participants to principles and strategies for creating welcoming environments in libraries. The tools are designed to help de-escalate or eliminate recurring stressful situations in spaces and interactions. The concepts are fundamental to equity, embracing diversity, stress reduction, violence prevention and helping to create safety and well-being. Since 2004, this work has been used successfully in libraries, education settings, community centers, organizations, youth work, child care, mental health centers, museums, neighborhoods and more. It has also been shared and replicated nationally, including in a number of library systems. Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health continues to receive requests from libraries across the nation.

Participants will leave with tools and strategies that can be used immediately in work and personal life.

Speakers: Darleen Simmons and Grit Youngquist are long-time Health Educators with Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health. Their work focuses on healthy youth development, violence prevention, healthy communities and is always done working closely with community partners.

Darleen is a graduate of Metro State University. Grit is a graduate of Augsburg College and St. Mary’s University.
