1:00  Evolution on the Stand: Revisiting the Scopes Trial at 100

Ryan Greenwood, Curator of Rare Books and Special Collections, University of Minnesota Law Library

In 1925, the trial of John T. Scopes became a national sensation and the focal point of a debate over the places of evolution and religion in public education. Popularly known as the Scopes “Monkey” Trial, The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes is celebrated today not only for the legal and cultural issues it raised but the lawyers who were involved. This presentation will discuss the Scopes trial and Clarence Darrow’s role in it. The presentation will tell the story of the trial through an exhibit currently open at the University of Minnesota Law Library, including discussion of key events and relationships as seen through the letters, speeches, books, case briefs and other material held in the University of Minnesota Law Library’s preeminent Clarence Darrow Collection.

2:15  Past and Future of Diversity in MALL

The MALL Diversity & Inclusion Committee (Gabby Holzmer, Allyson Ososki, and Elizabeth Tuckwood) will examine the history of diversity within MALL as well as AALL. 

3:00  Hot Topic - presented by the Government Relations Committee

Karen Westwood, Vice-Chair of the AALL Government Relations Committee will give a brief overview of how AALL is responding to actions of the current administration, discuss advocacy in general, and invite members to join in writing and calling on the spot. 

3:45  Closing Remarks & Toast to 70 Years of MALL
