    Job Description

    ·         Coordinates Technical Services Operations: purchasing, tracking costs, and processing materials

    ·         Maintains print materials: coordinates loose-leaf filing, maintains print collection, route and file periodicals

    ·         Maintains and enhances library content on the intranet

    ·         Support of the firm’s password management system

    ·         Assist with the evaluation, testing and implementation of new resources

    ·         Provide research and reference support to attorneys, legal assistants and other staff

     

    The position requires someone able to work independently as well as part of a team.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in a law firm, corporate legal department or academic law library, a MLIS a plus but not required.

    Technical Skills

    ·         Experience with Word, Excel and PowerPoint

    ·         Understanding of current cataloging standards (MARC, RDA)

    ·         Demonstrated knowledge of electronic information resources, experience with current technologies and software used to support online research

    ·         Must be detail-oriented, with excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with lawyers and staff at all levels

    ·         Ability to set priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines

    POSITION TITLE: Director of Library and Information Services

    DEPARTMENT: Library Services

    STATUS: Exempt

    REPORTS TO: Deputy Chief Operating Officer

    DATE: July 2014   

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Director of Library and Information Services has Firm-wide responsibility for the coordination of library and information services. The incumbent will research, evaluate, and implement new technologies to enhance and extend library services in innovative, user-centered, client-centered, and cost-effective ways and will provide leadership and management for technical services and systems operations. Responsibilities include acquisition management and collection development, budget development and invoicing, integrated library system operations, copyright and license compliance, and research services management.

    The Director of Library and Information Services reports to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer. This position will lead a diverse team of professionals across multiple offices, providing vision, guidance and coaching for direct reports. This position will be located in any of the Firm's nationwide offices.

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

    Management - 60%

    •Manages the operations and activities of library and knowledge support services and personnel Firm-wide.

    •Manages the Firm-wide delivery of research services for billable and non-billable research.

    •Assures adequate print and digital resources for specific subject areas key to the Firm's practice divisions, as well as business and industry resources.

    •Sets strategic direction for the units and plan, organize, manage and evaluate workflows, services and problem solving methods.

    •Manages personnel processes for the area, including evaluation of training needs and provision of appropriate training programs.

    •Manages acquisitions, cataloging, serials, interlibrary loans, electronic resources, and application administration and development.

    Instructional Services - 10%

    •Serves as an Instructional Services librarian, participating in liaison and outreach, instruction,     reference, and collection development.

    •Schedule and conduct training on research methodology for attorneys, paralegals, and summer associates.

    Development - 20%

    •Develop and implement a knowledge support services program.

    •Develop and implement a taxonomy system to aid information search and retrieval Firm-wide.

    •Integrate the taxonomy system into the Firm's various document management systems and search utilities.

    •Develop and implement a strategic cost recovery and digital resource management system.

    Budget Management - 10%

    •Prepare and implement an annual budget for all Firm libraries.

    •Review and revise vendor contracts, as needed.

    •Manage and approve invoices for all Firm library purchases.

    Desired Skills and Experience

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    •Masters of Library Science or Information Studies from an accredited university required; J.D. preferred.

    •3 years of experience in an academic or research library with one year of supervisory experience.

    •Five years of law library management experience.

    •Experience in at least one area of technical services: acquisitions, cataloging, serials, interlibrary loan or electronic resources management.

    •Experience with an integrated library system or a discovery system.

    •Experience with social networking technologies.

    •Experience with an electronic resource management system such as 360 Resource Manager.

    •Experience with a discovery system, such as WorldCat Local.

    •Experience with a variety of scripting and programming languages, such as HTML, PHP, Perl, JavaScript, XHTML, and CSS.

    •Experience with reporting software such as SQL.

    •Experience with Blackboard or other learning management system.

    •Knowledge of SCT Banner or other collegiate administrative software.

    •Knowledge of hardware and software security issues; relational database theory, standards, and software; metadata standards; and best practices in digital library projects.   

    POSITION COMPETENCIES

    •Highly professional with a strong customer service orientation, commitment to meeting deadlines, and ability to multitask in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

    •Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends and issues in the application of information technology to libraries and law practice.

    •Experience in managing large projects with complex variables and budgets.

    •Ability to work independently and to achieve outcomes in a collaborative environment, and to learn and apply new technologies quickly.

    •Excellent communication (including excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills) and interpersonal skills.

    •Excellent time management and organizational skills.

    •Expertise in searching online databases, including WestLaw, Lexis, Dialog and other online systems used in law firms.

    •Experience in the evaluation and negotiation of global contracts.

    •Experience with centralizing and streamlining processes, i.e., efficiency and continuous process improvement.

    Summary of position: 

    Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, responsible for providing complex Intellectual Property and other legal research for attorneys and clients using online and print resources, analyzing, synthesizing, and presenting information.  The librarian will also support the Marketing Department by performing marketing research services.  Observes confidentiality of client and firm matters.

    Responsibilities:

    1.         Provide customized research services in the area of Intellectual Property law practice.

    2.         Provide business and industry background research for attorneys, clients and the firm.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

              B.A. degree in Informational Management or advanced degree in Library Science desired.

                  Five years of research experience and law firm experience strongly preferred.

               Knowledge of research tools such as Lexis, Lexis Advance, Hoovers, ProQuest, PACER, Accurint, Courtlink, CCH Intelliconnect, Thomson Innovation, Orbit, TotalPatent, Saegis, WestMonitor.

               Understanding of library policies and procedures in order to maintain on-site operations as well as utilize the resources of local libraries.

               Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills in order to communicate and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of attorneys and staff and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.

               Work occasionally requires a high level of mental effort and strain when     answering a high volume of requests for information and performing other essential duties.

               Ability to retrieve and distribute print volumes, push and pull carts of books or      packages weighing up to 20 pounds and ability to retrieve and replace objects from shelves of up to 8 feet high.

               Work may occasionally require more than 37.5  hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.

                  Regular attendance at work.

    Working Conditions:

    1.     Normal office/library environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.

    The University of St. Thomas Law Library in Minneapolis, MN invites applications for a Research Librarian.

    The research librarian supports the mission of the School of Law by providing strong research support for faculty scholarship and teaching; providing reference services to law school students, faculty, and staff and members of the university and legal communities; teaching legal research; and assisting with a variety of other job-related projects as requested. Examples include: preparing guides to information resources and library services; assisting with collection development; working on special projects, such as helping to make faculty scholarship available on Digital Commons; preparing departmental reports and recommendations; and serving on library, law school, or university committees.

    Master's degree in Library Science (MLS or accredited equivalent) required; J.D. and law library experience preferred.
