    Title:                                  Research and Instructional Law Librarian

    Status:                              Full Time

    Mitchell Hamline Warren E. Burger Law Library is seeking a full-time Research and Instructional Law Librarian. The person in this position will provide Legal Reference Services to students, faculty, and alumni, helping them find and use resources that meet their research needs. The person in this position will also teach Legal Research in both informal and formal settings. Informal teaching may take place when the librarian works with students to demonstrate legal research strategies and database searching techniques. Formal teaching could include teaching legal research as part of the first year Lawyering course and/or teaching advanced legal research courses to upper level students, or teaching research units in upper level courses. This person will provide reference and research services daily and will participate in evening and weekend rotations. Additionally, this position will serve as a law library liaison to law faculty, participate in reference and library team meetings, prepare new and update existing research guides, forms, and manuals in digital format, and perform other duties as assigned or required.

    Qualifications: J.D. from and ABA accredited law school and Master’s degree in Library Science or

    M.L.I.S. from an ALA accredited college or university; three years’ experience providing reference service to students, faculty, attorneys and other legal professionals and two years teaching experience, although strongly related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered; familiarity with and interest in online teaching; thorough understanding of and experience with research methodology using print and electronic resources; familiarity with library operations and emerging technologies; knowledge of inter-disciplinary research practices; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational, time-management, and analytical skills; strong customer service orientation; ability to work independently and as part of a team; creativity, passion and enthusiasm for librarianship, courage to propose new ideas, projects, and workflows; and flexibility.

    Paid Internship Opportunity at the Minnesota State Law Library

    March 18, 2019  –  June 21, 2019*

    ~10 hours per week

    $12 per hour

    Requirements:

    • Ability to work ~10 hours per week at the Minnesota State Law Library during regular business hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (excluding holidays).
    • Excellent organization and time-management skills.
    • Preference may be given to applicants with a legal background or those who express interest in law librarianship.
    • Successful completion of a background check.

    Description: The Minnesota State Law Library Internship provides supervised experience in three key areas of law library operations.

    Technical services:

    • Update electronic index of legal periodicals
    • Shift collections
    • Convert microform documents to digital format

    Electronic Services:

    • Create original content and update current content in LibGuides
    • Assist with additional website updating

    Public Services:

    • Provide supervised assistance to patrons at the reference desk and during scheduled legal clinics
    • Perform basic legal research to assist library patrons and staff, including the Law Library Services to Prisoners program.

    Have an idea for a webinar or for a local or regional conference, and need some extra funding to bring in speakers or record the event? Then, on behalf of the AALL Continuing Professional Education Committee, I encourage you to apply for a AALL/Bloomberg Law Continuing Education Grant to get funding to support education programming that could benefit the entire AALL community.


    Funding is available to cover expenses that directly affect the program such as room rental, speaker fees, travel fees, and recording/broadcasting the program, although funding cannot be used for food, advertising or vendor-specific programming. For detailed information, see the grant program FAQ.

    The MALL Newsletter committee is always seeking out contributions from our esteemed colleagues.  If you have something you want to share – we want to hear it!  Some ideas for content are listed below (but please feel free to think outside the bullet points!):

    • Features on specific topics of professional/research interest
    • Step-by-step how-to’s
    • Practical advice supplemented with real-world experience, research, or analysis.
    • Book or product reviews

    Compelling first-person or personal stories or reports on events are also are welcome.  Though we’d be open to longer (or mini) features, we’re hoping to see contributions range between 300-600 words.

    Have you discovered a new product that you think is great? Nominate it for the New Product Award! Any AALL member may nominate products. Vendors can nominate their own products.

    Deadline for Submissions: February 1, 2019

    This award honors new commercial information products that enhance or improve existing law library services or procedures or innovative products which improve access to legal information, the legal research process, or procedures for technical processing of library materials.

    A "new" product is one which has been in the library-related marketplace for two years or less. New products may include, but are not limited to, computer hardware and/or software, educational or bibliographic material, or other products or devices that aid or improve library workflow, research, or intellectual access. Products that have been reintroduced in a new format or with substantial changes are eligible.

    MALL's bylaws require that we provide a vehicle for the delivery of election results, budget updates, changes in dues, and other information.  In the past, MALL has provided this information, along with articles and updates in a regularly published pdf/print newsletter.  Over the years, we (the newsletter staff) have gotten anecdotal feedback from membership about how you want to see this content delivered – some of you like things just as they are, but there are some of you who are looking for an update.
