Manager of Research Services

Summary:

Responsible for managing all aspects of Research Services including attorney research training, staff supervision and development, budget management, collection development, legal research, space planning, vendor relations, evaluation of traditional and online resources, client and competitor awareness, library technical services and procedures.

 

Job Responsibilities:

-         Provide sophisticated in-depth legal and non-legal research, using print and online resources, to support the practices of the firm.

·         Provide quick-answer reference services and current awareness services to attorneys, paralegals and staff.

·         Design and deliver training in online and print resources to attorneys and paralegals; coordinate with vendors/trainers and attorneys for specialized online training sessions.

·         Manage library orientation for new attorneys and paralegals, including Summer Associates.

·         Formulate policies and procedures that insure the effective and balanced delivery of library services and resources to all firm personnel.

·         Establish collection development and retention policies for all library products, including the acquisition of print and non-print resources.  Monitor and approve print and electronic resource expenses.

·         Evaluate potential research products and emerging information technologies; oversee the selection and implementation to support the delivery of library services and products.

·         Serve as primary liaison with vendors; negotiates appropriate pricing strategies and contracts for terms that will benefit the firm; maintains vendor relationships.     

·         Partner with Marketing Department to provide competitive intelligence/company information on clients or potential clients.

·         Hire, supervise, evaluate and develop library personnel.

·         Prepare an annual budget; monitor research costs and recovery; prepare reports; oversee coding and processing of Research Services invoices and reconciliation of statements; review reports for budget variances and prepare justifications when necessary.  Approve and process invoices and purchase requests. 

·         Enforce copyright compliance policy and modify when necessary to meet current legal specifications.

·         Maintain a proficiency in research techniques and perform research services.  Provide back-up for library staff positions as necessary.

Requirements:

·         Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.

·         A  minimum of six years of progressively responsible library experience, including experience in a supervisory or leadership role.

·         Knowledge of library administration to effectively manage library functions and personnel for optimum operation.

·         Experience in a mid to large- size law firm is preferred.

·         Significant experience searching Westlaw, CCH, RIA, D&B, Accurint, internet, public records and other databases to competently research in the firm’s practice areas; strong problem-solving and analytical skills need to gather information and determine appropriate research approach.

·         Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to lead people and projects, and the ability to deal effectively with differing opinions and personalities.

·         Possess strong service orientation, ability to work independently, multi-task, set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

·         Proficient skill level in computer applications (Microsoft WORD, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint Portal).
